Which Microwaves Are Worth Repairing?

Not all microwaves fall into the same category. Here's how we help you decide before anyone rolls out.

Over-the-Range Microwaves
Over-the-range models are usually excellent repair candidates. Replacing one often means buying a new appliance, removing the existing unit, reinstalling mounting brackets, reconnecting the vent system, and aligning everything over the range again. In many cases, repairing a failed magnetron, door switch, or control component costs significantly less than replacing the entire unit.
Built-In and Drawer Microwaves
Built-in and drawer microwaves are typically worth repairing, even as they get older. They're designed around custom cabinet openings and trim kits that may no longer match current models. Repairing the existing microwave often avoids cabinet modifications or replacing expensive trim components.
Countertop Microwaves
This is where we give homeowners a straightforward answer. Most standard countertop microwaves cost less than our minimum service charge, so we don't recommend repairing them. Rather than scheduling an appointment that doesn't make financial sense, we'll tell you that during the initial phone call. The main exceptions are premium convection or combination countertop models and specialty units that would be difficult or expensive to replace.

Common Microwave Problems We Repair

No heat, loud humming, sparking, dead displays, and doors that won't start the unit - these are the microwave failures we see most.

Microwave Runs but Doesn't Heat
If the light comes on, the turntable spins, and the timer counts down but the food stays cold, the problem is almost always within the high-voltage heating system. The magnetron, high-voltage diode, or capacitor are the components most commonly responsible. Instead of replacing the most expensive part first, we test the entire circuit to identify the actual failure.
Loud Humming While Cooking
A microwave naturally produces a low operating hum, but a sudden loud buzzing or growling noise usually signals a problem. A failing magnetron or stressed high-voltage transformer are among the most common causes. Identifying the source early can sometimes prevent additional damage to related components.
Turntable Doesn't Rotate
The turntable helps distribute microwave energy evenly across the food. When it stops turning, the problem often comes down to a worn turntable motor, damaged drive coupler, or roller ring that's no longer moving freely. These are generally straightforward repairs, particularly on over-the-range and built-in units.
Sparking or Arcing Inside the Microwave
Flashing sparks inside the cooking cavity should never be ignored. A damaged waveguide cover, chipped interior coating, or exposed metal can all create electrical arcing. Continuing to use the microwave can permanently damage the magnetron, turning a relatively small repair into a much larger one.
Display or Buttons Stop Working
Touchpads and electronic controls wear differently. Sometimes only a few buttons stop responding because moisture or steam has entered the keypad membrane. A completely dark display may point toward an internal fuse or electronic control board instead. We isolate the failed component before recommending replacement.
Microwave Won't Start
If pressing Start does nothing, the door safety system is one of the first things we inspect. Microwaves rely on multiple door interlock switches that must all confirm the door is closed before the unit will operate. Worn latches, misaligned doors, or failed switches are much more common than major electronic failures.

Why We Don't Recommend DIY Microwave Repairs

Microwaves are different from almost every other household appliance.

Even after the power cord has been unplugged, the high-voltage capacitor inside can retain a dangerous electrical charge. That's why the first step in every professional microwave repair is safely discharging the capacitor before any internal components are touched.

There are a few safe things homeowners can check:

  • Verify the outlet has power.
  • Check the breaker.
  • Make sure the door closes completely.
  • Remove any metal objects or damaged cookware from inside the cavity.
  • Heat a cup of water for about a minute. If everything appears to operate normally but the water stays cold, the heating system has likely failed.

Opening the cabinet, however, isn't recommended. The high-voltage section requires specialized procedures and equipment to service safely.

Over-the-Range, Built-In, and Drawer Microwave Repair

Over-the-range microwaves do more than heat food. They also serve as the exhaust hood above the range.

When we're servicing one, we also inspect vent fan operation, lighting, grease filters, and mounting hardware. Removing and reinstalling the microwave is part of the repair - not an added service.

Built-in and drawer microwaves require extra care because they're integrated into finished cabinetry. Many repairs can be completed without disturbing surrounding trim, helping preserve the original appearance of the kitchen.
