Gas Burner Won't Ignite
If you turn the knob and nothing happens - or you hear clicking without a flame - the burner is missing one of three things: ignition, gas flow, or a clear path for both. Food spills and grease blocking the burner ports are far more common than failed parts. If cleaning isn't enough, we test the ignition system, gas supply, and burner components to identify the actual cause before replacing anything.
Electric Burner Won't Heat
A cold surface element can have several different causes depending on the type of range. On traditional coil-top ranges, the heating element or receptacle often wears out after years of use. Smooth-top electric ranges hide the radiant element beneath the glass, so electrical testing is the only reliable way to determine whether the element, control switch, or wiring has failed.
Burner Keeps Clicking
Continuous clicking is usually related to the spark ignition system. If it begins immediately after cleaning or a boil-over, moisture around the ignition electrode is often the culprit and may dry out on its own after several hours. If the clicking continues, the electrode, spark switch, or spark module may require replacement.
Glass Cooktop Burner Isn't Working
When only one cooking zone stops heating while the others work normally, the issue is typically isolated to that burner. A failed radiant element, defective control switch, or electronic relay are among the most common causes. If the glass itself has cracked, it's safest to stop using the cooktop until it's inspected, since moisture can reach electrical components beneath the surface.
Burner Won't Simmer or Gets Too Hot
A burner that only operates on high heat or struggles to maintain temperature usually has a failing control component. Electric ranges commonly develop worn infinite switches that no longer regulate power correctly. On gas models, burner valves can wear over time and lose the ability to control flame size accurately. Both are straightforward repairs when addressed early.
Burner Stuck on High
This is one problem that shouldn't be ignored. If a burner can't be turned down, the control switch or gas valve has likely failed. Besides making cooking difficult, a burner locked on high heat creates an unnecessary safety risk and should be repaired as soon as possible.

Ignition

Why Gas Burners Keep Clicking

The spark ignition system is designed to stop clicking as soon as the burner lights. If it continues, something is preventing that process from completing.

Moisture is one of the most common causes. Water from cleaning or a boil-over can temporarily interfere with the spark. Dirt or grease around the burner ports can also prevent proper ignition.

If cleaning and drying don't solve the problem, a cracked ignition electrode or failing spark module becomes much more likely.

One important distinction: continuous clicking is usually an appliance issue. The smell of natural gas with all burners turned off is different. If that happens, stop using the range, leave the area if necessary, and contact your gas utility before arranging appliance service.
